Pink Elephants on Parade

Wow. If you ever need a reminder of why Disney movies were better back in the day, this crazy hallucination sequence from Dumbo is a nice reminder of the artistry, creativity and all around insanity that used to be Disney.

Also, it is a reminder that it used to be acceptable to have dark, even occasionally scary imagery, which has now been all but purged from any of today’s mass produced children’s entertainment. Maybe that’s why kids today are such pussies.

Anyway, hats off to the late Norman Ferguson and team for this sequence.

BONUS: In the video above, the original audio has been replaced by extraterrestrial jazz musician Sun-Ra’s version, to the great benefit of the segment, I think.

FUN FACT: The Dumbo ride at Disneyland was originally going to be based on this scene, but the idea was scrapped and they made a more family friendly Dumbo ride. What a shame.
